Darlinghurst’s character evolves, housing prices soar following gentrification

Once regarded as Sydney’s forbidden suburb following its reputation as a prostitution and drug haven, Darlinghurst has been reinvented as a metropolitan hotspot perfect for young professionals and urbane older couples.

With intense gentrification of the area occurring at the turn of the millennium, the area’s median house price has jumped an astonishing 124 per cent, Domain reports.

Not everyone is happy with the boom, though, with some fearful that Darlinghurst is losing its unique colour that made it such an appealing prospect for outsiders.
